Whew...and a word about church

That was a long day. 12 hours on a Sunday. Yikes. The good thing is that I got everything done this weekend that I had hoped to get done. The proofing process can now begin and I can carry on and put together the odds and ends while that's happening.

I missed church again today. I don't think I've mentioned on this blog that I've been to church a couple of times lately. Seems odd, doesn't it, as I'm an atheist. No, I'm not reconsidering my position...not in the least.

One day several weeks ago I was reading one of the many atheist blogs I follow and the writer mentioned something called "Universal Unitarianism." I'd heard of Unitarianism before. Anyone who lived in Ottawa in the 60s and 70s will remember Lotta Hitschmanova and her radio commercials for Care Canada..."send donations to 56 Sparks Street." I'll never forget those ads.

But I didn't know what Unitarianism was. Something in this blog I was reading tweaked my curiosity, so I started doing some online research and discovered, much to my interest, that Unitarianism, in its current form, is a non-denominational, totally open church that doesn't even insist that you believe in god. They take atheists!

This excited me, because the only thing I feel I've missed out on being an atheist is the strong sense of community that people who attend church benefit from. And here I find a church - with a vigourous congregation right here in Ottawa, no less - that will happily accept me and my atheistic phisolophy. Even better, while reading their monthly newsletter, I found a name I recognized in the masthead. One of their proofreaders is a friend of the family! So I emailed them and invited myself along the next time they went, which was to be two weeks from when I wrote.

I've been to church twice now and really, really enjoyed it both times. I find it very fulfilling, and I come away with a happy, peaceful feeling that is not at all unwelcome. I've had trouble getting there the past few weeks, but I do intend to go again, and will try to make it a semi-regular part of my weekend routine.

Who knew...Patti going to church on Sundays!
