Well, I survived my first nor'easter. LOL. The snow ended around noon yesterday, but continued to blow really hard all day. I never did get in to work. I feel bad about it too...I guess people who had the same or longer commute as me managed to get in. Oh well.
Had a little fun getting to work this morning. One of the streets I have to take to get out of this subdivision is a short, somewhat steepish hill that I have to approach from a left-hand turn. As I came around to turn onto it, I noticed a minivan backing slowly down the hill to the level part of the road. Uh oh, I though...bet they couldn't get up the hill. Sure enough, when I tried, I couldn't make it, and had to do the same thing as the minivan. Wasn't a problem once I had a bit of a run on it lol.
Got my parking pass and my metro pass and just flew through all the checkpoints today - it was great. But then, the minute I walked into the office, I got asked into a meeting I didn't know I was expected to attend to give a brief update on what my team is up to...felt really intimidated because several of the people in the meeting are a bit antagonized by the idea of being subjected to another one of these processes. Then, as soon as I got out of that, I had to run into another meeting I hadn't known I was expected at, and was in there till 3:30! blah!! That one was also a little intimidating. A bit overwhelming. Also made a fool of myself when I made it obvious I wasn't completely aware of the proper name of one of our products. But after a while I started to feel better. It was a loooong meeting, much of it irrelevant to me and boring, and I was struggling to stay focused near the end.
So I didn't get much done today. Hopefully tomorrow I'll be able to focus better, make some real solid recommendations about what I should be doing, and contact my subcommittee chairman who has just been promoted to a very busy new position.
One of the bonuses of this job is that I get a laptop because I'll be travelling a lot. The travelling part is apparently going to start soon, so I went out this evening and bought a Compaq Presario that was on sale. It's charging now. I think I have to fully charge the battery before I turn the computer on for the first time. So it'll probably be tomorrow night before I get to play with it and set it up. Cripes...didn't I just go through this with my Mac?? I should've bought a Mac laptop back then, but I would've had to pay for it myself, and the cheapest one is at least twice what I paid for the Mini.
So now when I go on business trips, I'll be able to keep in touch and entertain myself when I'm stuck in a hotel room after work every day.
