Settling in

Holy cow...I haven't posted anything in almost a week! I guess that means I'm settling in and getting used to the place.

The two most exciting things this week were that I got my motor vehicle inspection done and approved, and I bought a new cell phone.

The cell phone is great. Takes pictures, videos, plays MP3s, has a removable memory card so I can put anything on it and take it off easily. Here's some photos I took this week:

This is me, obviously. Trying out the "Antique" style of photo on the camera settings.

The second pic is the house I live in now. The window to the right of the front door is my window.

The third pic is a Canadian navy ship heading out to the ocean. You can see it just at the top corner of the dark building. Looks smaller than I remember. But wait till you see the next one...

The last pic is a container ship that went by on Thursday, I think it was. These ships are HUGE. They probably have a crew the size of a small town. I can never get over their size when I see them...especially the fact that they actually float!

One of these days I'm going to start keeping track of the ships I see so I'll know if I've seen one before. The navy ships too - they don't have names on them, just numbers, so I want to find out what their names are so I can familiarize myself with them. They probably have a regular retinue of ships in Halifax Harbour.

Had a quiet, productive week. Drove around with a big red "rejected" sticker on my car's windshield all week. It seems that my fears of major repair work being necessary were completely unnecessary. They didn't get me on the obvious stuff...they got me on the surprising stuff.

To register a vehicle in Nova Scotia, you have to have a motor vehicle inspection (MVI) done once a year. They won't give you insurance or licence your car without it. So, assuming I would have to register my car in Nova Scotia, I started out, a week a go yesterday, by getting my car inspected.

Turned out all that needed to be fixed was the rubber lining around the inside of the driver's door and the plastic cover on my seat belt clicker part. I've been driving around with both those things missing for at least two years. But they won't approve my car without fixing them. LOL...sometimes the littlest things get in your way.

Surprisingly, the rubber was quoted at $250. The plastic cover for the seatbelt latch was going to be hard to find...maybe $40 if a used one could be found in Halifax, maybe a lot more if we had to find one in the U.S.

Turned out a local junk yard had one, so once both parts were at the shop, I scheduled my work to be done yesterday. Brought the car in first thing in the morning, picked it up after work. And they have a super shuttle service that'll take you anywhere you need to go, and pick you up on the trip back. Just based on that, I decided I'd be making these folks my regular mechanics while I'm here. But they didn't stop there!

When I went to pick up the car, the guy who runs the collision centre (the best friend of one of my colleagues at work), told me he wasn't going to charge me for the seat belt cover, he was going to knock $30 off the price of the rubber, and he didn't charge me a CENT for the labour!! I couldn't believe it! I was so stunned I didn't even think to ask why they were giving me such a break!

So after I signed off on the work and paid the bill, the guy said "so now you can take it over and get it registered." I said "well, I may not have to do that after all, I may be able to keep it registered in Ontario while I'm here." He just had a blank look on his face, and I thought "oh no, he gave me such a good deal because he was thinking I was going to need the approval to get the car registered...and now I may not be getting it registered." So I fretted and worried for five minutes before blurting out "I'm a little uncomfortable here...did you give me that great deal because you thought I'm getting the car registered?" He just looked at me surprised and said "I don't care if you get the car registered." LOL...so I was worried for nothing. That's SO me. And then HE got worried that I got that work done possibly for no reason! He's like "but you wouldn't have got them fixed if you didn't need to for your mvi approval, right?" I said "No, but I really had wanted them fixed." "But you probably wouldn't have." "But I WANTED to!" LOL! So I ended up trying to make HIM feel better! LOL He's a good guy.

So I'm going to write him a nice thank you note, and will take a large double-double to the guy who did the work - Kevin - and maybe a box of donuts or something for the guys. The boss is on a diet apparently, so I have to think of something to take that he can enjoy too.

Other than that, the week was pretty calm. My office-mate, Dave, was away all week, so I got a lot done. When he's there, we tend to talk a lot. That's a good thing though, because we NEED to communicate a lot so we'll do this job well. But it keeps me from doing the other parts of the job that I also need to do! So I managed to get enough done this week to meet the deadline I had for Feb. 28, which makes me feel good. I may even be able to spend some time writing up a report about it all.

Tomorrow, I'm flying to St. John's Newfoundland, which is apparently in the middle of a huge blizzard as I write this. But it should be over by the time I have to fly in. Only problem might be whether the flight will be on time, so I'll have to contact the airport in the morning. I'm SO looking forward to this trip. I get to see St. John's again, which is a city that I LOVE. I get to spend three nights in a really swanky hotel with a jacuzzi and fireplace in my own room. What more could a gal want. LOL

Doesn't take much to make me happy.
