I've often said that the people in Atlantic Canada are the nicests people in Canada. And as evinced by this bit of graffiti I found on the back of a chair on the ferry on Friday afternoon, I'm right.
"Geoff Brown eats sandwiches." LOL Scratched into the chair with some sharp instrument as if it was a profound statement that the world simply had to know. I love it.
The ferry ride home on Friday was interesting for more than its graffiti. We had some big wind on Friday, b'y! And I learned something about the water in the harbour. At first I thought, when you see those choppy little waves with the whitecaps on 'em, that it would be a rough ride. Not so! The ferry ploughs through those like they're not even there. It might go a little slower, as it's not getting the "grip" on the water that it does when it's calm.
What you gotta watch out for in the harbour are the swells. They're sneaky, ya see. You don't really notice them when you're looking out the window of the ferry terminal. The harbour can look quite calm, but that's just a ruse. A sneaky harbour trick! When there's swell-action going on, that's when you have to sit down, hang on and don't get up till the boat comes to a complete halt on the other side.
That's what happened Friday on the way home. I had to catch the 4:15 to Alderney Landing because my car was at the shop and I was meeting the shuttle at Alderney. Everything seemed normal till the green light came on and we all started walking down the ramp to the ferry.
Now, I had just realized earlier this week that these ramps are not built on solid concrete platforms. Noooo...they're just ramps attached at one end to the ferry terminal, and floating on pontoons or something at the other end. So I'm walking down this ramp on Friday afternoon, and the wind outside is blowing its little brains out, and the ramp is creeking and groaning and sounding like a 400-foot screen door swinging on its hinges. And it's swaying a little too! My inner ears doth protested! I felt like I had to keep correcting my stance, even though my eyes couldn't detect any movement. It was way strange. I was glad to get on the ferry and sit down.
But the fun didn't stop there. Oh no! Shortly after I got myself seated, I noticed how the boat was going up and down and up and down and *BAM!* slamming against the dock. And up and down and up and down and BAM!
LOL...that was fun!
And really, it wasn't all that bad, Mum...I'm just making it sound dramatic cuz it's fun. The boat hardly rocked at all on the way over.
Hardly ;-)
