We made it!
Arrived yesterday afternoon just before 4pm, dropped Tonia off at home with all her gear and then came right to Mum's, where I was immediately told, while enfolded in a big hug, that I'm not allowed to go away like that ever again. I promised I wouldn't.
The trip, for me, went without a hitch from start to finish. Pretty much. Unfortunately, Tonia couldn't say the same, as she had the flight from hell and then they lost her bag. Fortunately, she got it back the next day, in time to wrap her gifts.
We enjoyed a pleasant Christmas at her Dad's place. Both of us got peopled-out early in the game, as neither of us is accustomed to being around people so much, especially loud people with rambunctious dogs. But we were fed to the gills and spoiled rotten and sent off with lots of food for the road and promises of rescue should it be needed.
Our first day on the road was rather interesting. Snow, snow, snow. But luckily the roads stayed relatively clear for the most part and we just took it easy and got to our half-way point, Riviere-du-Loup in about six or seven hours. Unfortunately, I wasn't paying attention when I booked the hotel, and it didn't have a restaurant. As the weather had gotten bad enough to prevent us from leaving the hotel once we got there, we had to order in. That turned out okay though...and Tonia treated! :-)
We spent a rather restless evening in the hotel, but settled down a bit when we put a movie in (Memoirs of a Geisha) and went to bed relatively early.
Our second day got off to a somewhat confused start, as we missed a turn onto the main highway and found ourselves travelling a very pretty, but narrow and remote secondary highway which we eventually decided wasn't where we were supposed to be. Turned around and found our cut-off not too far behind us. The most adventurous part of the day was travelling behind a snowplough for several kilometres in our own travelling blizzard. The plough was throwing up tons of powdered snow into the air and there were times when we couldn't see past the end of the hood of the car...if that far!
Once we got ourselves back where we were supposed to be, the rest of the trip went extremely well. The roads were clear and dry and we made great time, stopping for gas and munchies and lunch a few times.
I think we made the entire trip on about 3 tanks of gas...not bad!
I'm thrilled to be home finally and looking forward to the next stage of the adventure...starting back at the old job, and then moving into my new apartment!!
